Whether you're a seasoned homeowner, building a new home or business here are a few things you should know before hiring an Electrical Contractor in the State of Connecticut. Q: Should I hire a handyman to do electrical wiring in my home or business?

A: No. The State of Connecticut requires Electricians to have an extensive education and training. Most importantly they must pass an exam before being granted a license. The reason for this long process is to ensure your safety.

Tip: A licensed Electrical Contractor in the State of Connecticut is required by law to provide their electrical license number to the public. Click here to search a Trade License or here to search a Business Name. If you can't find the Contractor or Business you are looking for call the State of Connecticut and ask.

Q: Will I need Permits for my project?

A: It all depends on the project. Most new, remodel, and maintenance electrical work require a permit and inspection by your local Building Inspector. Depending on the job, the Homeowner or Electrician can submit the permit and schedule inspections.

Tip: Ask your Electrician if a permit is required and how many inspections will be scheduled. Make sure to have all paperwork in order before the start of your project.

Q: How can I tell if my Electrician has insurance, or do I need to carry it?

A: That's a good question. Start by asking your Electrician if (he or she) is properly insured. For large scale projects (like new construction or renovating a home or business) request a certificate of insurance to keep on file.

Tip: Often Homeowners are required to carry insurance for new construction, flips and remodeling projects. They may also be required to carry additional coverage when the Homeowner is considered the General Contractor. In this case, call your insurance company and ask your representative.

Q: Should I trust websites like Angie's List and Home Adviser to pick an Electrician?

A: No. Sometimes the best way to find a good Electrician is by asking a neighbor or co-worker, not a pay to advertise website. Often reviews are flawed or inaccurate. It's very difficult to tell if an online review is honest or not.

Tip: Try this method, ask your friends, family, and neighbors if they know a good quality Electrician. It my sound old fashioned, but it works.
